In 1981 the Monroe County Rotary Clubs formed a 501 (c) 3 Corporation and took over the struggling Ladies Professional Golf Tournament at Locust Hill Country Club.
Since then, all Tournament profits have supported the two Rotary Camps for disabled children, The Sunshine Campus, and Camp Haccamo.
The LPGA has become the premier professional sporting
event in Rochester, earning more than 7 million dollars for the benefit of these two Rotary Camps. Today, the LPGA players, the Monroe County Rotary Clubs,
thousands of community volunteers, corporate partners and Wegmans ensure a summer camp experience for thousands of children with disabilities and city youths.
Rochester Rotary Sunshine Campus was established in 1922 at Durand Eastman Park to meet the needs of children with physical disabilities. In 1973, The Sunshine Campus moved to its current location in Rush, NY. This premier facility resides on 157 beautifully wooded acres. The Sunshine Campus is unique because it was developed to serve people with disabilities in quality residential camping programs. The campus is fully accessible to meet the needs of all people with disabilities. Today, the Sunshine Campus also serves young people from the city and partners with various community organizations in camping programs.
Camp Haccamo, located in the Town of Penfield on several acres of wooded land, was started in 1956 to meet the needs of children and adults with disabilities in Monroe County. It is owned and operated by 15 suburban Monroe County Rotary Clubs and provides a residential camping experience to over 350 campers with disablities each summer at no cost to the campers or their families. Camp Haccamo features a full range of activities including water sports, a miniature golf course and its own operating train. Rotarians are also proud to open this unique facility to approximately 30 community groups throughout the year.
